A study of heart sounds and murmurs by direct heart recordings.

چکیده
A method is described for recording heart sounds and murmurs on the surface of the heart chambers and great vessels. Studies were performed on normal dogs and in those with murmurs of known origin, chiefly pulmonic and aortic stenosis. In addition, the reappearance of the murmurs in such cases was studied, following the release of caval occlusion. It was found that the systolic murmur of pulmonic stenosis returned almost immediately after release of caval occlusion, whereas the aortic murmurs did not return until usually from six to 10 beats after release. This may provide a basis for the differentiation of right heart and left heart murmurs by a carefully controlled Valsalva maneuver. DE ESPITE technical advances in phono-cardiography, the source of many heart murmurs remains obscure. One example is the basal systolic murmur in patients with atrial septal defects. To investigate further the origin of heart murmurs, an experimental technic has been developed in which sounds are recorded directly from the heart and great vessels in dogs. This technic has been used to record heart sounds in normal control animals, and immediately after the production of a defect in the atrial septum. In addition, in order to test the hypothesis that recording directly from the heart's surface would identify the site of origin of murmurs, experiments were carried out in which aortic or pulmonic stenosis was produced. In the course of these experiments, it was also possible to evaluate the test suggested by Zinsser and Kay' in which "right heart" and "left heart" murmurs may be differentiated by the length of time required for the murmur to return, following a Valsalva maneuver.

Digital Subtraction Phonocardiography (DSP) applied to the detection and characterization of heart murmurs
BACKGROUND During the cardiac cycle, the heart normally produces repeatable physiological sounds. However, under pathologic conditions, such as with heart valve stenosis or a ventricular septal defect, blood flow turbulence leads to the production of additional sounds, called murmurs. Murmurs are random in nature, while the underlying heart sounds are not (being deterministic). INNOVATION We ...
متن کاملA survey on the prevalence of heart murmurs in polo horses
Background: Cardiac murmur and subsequently cardiac failure is one of the poor-performance causes in athletic horses. Attention to murmur character is vital during heart examination. Polo is a sport which demands very high stress on horses, which may result in more stress on cardiovascular system. Objectives: In this study we assume that high pressure on polo horses makes them more susceptible ...

Background & aim: Congenital heart disease is one of the most common malformations at birth that require timely recognition and treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and etiology of detected heart murmurs and association between congenital heart disease and heart murmurs. Recognition of murmurs etiology would help us to manage and treat them properly. Methods: In this...

This study was conducted on 384 clinically healthy sheep and goats from farms around Tehran suburb. The animals were divided into two equal groups (according to species) and then assigned into three age groups, two gender groups and female animals into two groups: late pregnant and non-pregnant. Heart sounds were auscultated by two cardiologists and heart rate and probable murmurs were recorded...

Heart sounds and murmurs provide crucial diagnosis information for several heart diseases such as natural or prosthetic valve dysfunction and heart failure, which need to isolate the cardiac pathologies whether murmurs or superimposed sounds to the heart sounds in order to better appreciate their durations to can be processed more easily. This paper presents an algorithm for the detection of he...
